ask not what the economy can do for you, but what you can do for the economy

dear friends (but mostly sofi),

here are some things that i own, just bought, or really want (i have a bookmark folder on my computer named consumption-- true story)

so this is the coat i share with heather graham. i love it. it brings joy to the grayest of days.

most recently, i have been obsessed with finding orla keily merchandise at a discount (orla is usually sort of costy). so i attended my very first new york sample sale (held in a sketchy office building on 7th close to penn station). there i purchased this for well under market value.

i also scored the sweater below on ebay.

in other news, i have also been considering signing over my next paycheque to boden because i want all of the following:

even though i bought a totally lovely and spendy dress in the dubs this summer on the pretense that i would wear it to my pseudo-bro's wedding (i asked him if i could, he said yes) now that he actually asked and the wedding is going to be at a cute new hampshire inn, i just feel the above is more appropriate. i am not going to lie, i also want the matching coat even though i realize that would make me about as stylish as margaret thatcher.

can a girl really have too many dresses with polka dots? i also really want this (which i feel is a rehersal dinner/ work in wallace hall candidate)

and this one's hardly even irresponsible. and i also want the cute poka dot swimsuit that matches the lining (not that i would be wearing them together for that flasher-chic look)

and finally, i love this little shirt from etsy.

with love for people who understand it really does feel good to pay less,

when you think celebrities are stealing your furniture

dear friends,

you have so many reasons to judge me this morning. first, i was reading the celebrity baby blog and came across this photo.

and, then i nearly flew into a rage when i felt like they had stolen my dream rocking chair. i have been swooning over this for a while and thinking about what fabrics i could use to make it fit in my living room (there is no nursery in my trailer)those of you with with spare change would be most welcome to pick it up for me over at egiggle.

back to the working,

you can buy everything you need and lots you don't online

dear friends,

i have been particularly busy of late. and when i get too busy to spend my $ having actual out and about fun, i buy things on the internets. here are some things i have recently purchased:

1) moleskin dublin city guide. 58 days until i am there!

2) via an etsy seller, this is my most favourite thing in the world right now.

3) the doll not the child. and not for me. for hope, who is very into dora the explorer. swiper no swiping!

4) for easter, under cute cardigan... because yellow is awesome
5) for work, aka the war against the pile of reading

6) because i have a deep and abiding love of dots that will not disappear with trend. i am now on the hunt for a super hot vintage red slip to wear underneath this

i also bought a vacuum. true story.

(the return of) irresponsible consumption day

dear friends,

i try to keep my life simple. i get rid of one old thing the minute i get something new. i don't have knick knacks. i like grocery shopping when i just buy what i will use immediately. but, i can't deny that i am a commodity fetishist. during my first foray into teaching marx to girls who were thinking about the next purse they were going to buy, i too used shopping to cope with being alienated from my labor. it was back in 2004 that i declared my first irresponsible consumption day. it coincided with pay day and mcgill free friday (another much beloved tradition). lately i have felt very much like i did in those mcgill days-- too much ra-ing, too much ta-ing, too many papers all in progress, and all work all the time. and i will do some work today, but:

the girls of wallace 129 are going to zoe. i am going to buy clothes and dress like a princeton undergrad (well, as much as is possible for someone who consumes more than just salad). today i am going to buy whatever i want. even if it is gold lamee. or fur. or i will only where it once. i am going to wear some of this new stuff to the re-opening of the graduate student bar (possibly even breaking my boycott on any club that involves standing in line). and when i get into said bar, there will be mass irresponsible consumption of alcohol.

for one day i am going to ignore the structural problems and root causes of my malaise and shop and drink and be merry.

ps- don't judge! i almost declared it sugababes appreciation day.
