wherein an email to two friends becomes a "dear friends"

dear friends,

my two best friends in princeton were having quite the crappy day, so i made them a cd of my favourite songs to cheer them up. all ended well for them, so here is the track list for you (and email me if you want me to send you the songs)

1.baby dayliner "go on baby" i have listened to this song every morning for the last two months. well maybe not everyday, but on the days that i don't get to listen to it,i think about how what i really need to get me going is this song. it is better than tea. you'll have to check with hannah and mrs. b, but i am pretty sure i in fact squealed with glee when BD played this on sunday night. i can't decide if it makes me want to pump my fist or swing dance, so in the end I just end up having some sort of spasm whenever i hear it. but,i am always smiling during the spasm. learn more about baby dayliner here

2.dj copy "emotions"
this is a treasure from the internet. ordinarily you would have to buy a mobius beard record or go see his show to get his bonus "dj opy DIVA mixtape cd". i do not like mobius beard. i do like mariah carey. i used to think it was in a sort of "it's so bad it's good sort of way", but now i am unapologetic. it is good. and, it's better with help from as the kids say dope beats. this song makes me want to dance sober.

3. cat power "lived in bars"
the c in cat power is for cathartic, and that's what any good playlist is. i actually can't remember the last time i made a cd or playlist that didn't have any cat power on it. there are lots of solid CP choices, but in the end i like this one because it is a sort of at the end of the day life is what you make of it tale.

4.bishop allen "things are what you make of them"
this the aspertame version of the above. i am not much of a pollyanna, i like the sad bastard music too much. and i am sort of pragmatic. but i think things are what you make of them is a good motto, so i let this song boss me around some times.

5. elizabeth harper "trouble in the palace again"
so this is not a song from march. this is a song from three weeks ago. but, i remembered that you like it V. i like it too. it is just sort of pretty.and what is wrong with that?

6. jim guthrie "hands in my pockets"
jim guthrie is canadian. he lives in montreal. the first time i saw him he
was the first opener in a three band set that featured the constantines headlining. it was day 3 on the epic "Rocktober" 8 straight days of shows adventure. i think i wanted to bail halfway to mile end, but that's when we came up CAM drinks like britney spears night. fyi britney spears drinks vodka and redbull. all my excess energy was chanelled into the JG set. he did super-rad, wicked-bad (bad in the good
way) cover of destiny's child's survivor. but this song was my favourite. and
i was always spotting him around montreal-- on the metro, at dusty's (my favourite Breakfast spot). i hope i can take each of you there at some point.

7.tegan and sara "where does the good go?"
tegan and sara are twin lesbians and are largely responsible for the female
hispter mullet in montreal. one of those things is socially acceptable, the other is not. i do not think it is a coincidence that the raw numbers of people spotted on the street sporting this look increased after sara moved to montreal for school. i saw them at queen's for $3. this song was featured on grey's anatomy. it was also on a cd hannah gave me. sometimes i need to ask myself where *does* the good go?

8. jens lekman "black cab"
this song reminds me of nights that seem bad in the moment, but then turn out to be good memories.

9. jose gonzalez "hand on your heart"
there is just something about this song that gets me everytime. i can't tell whether it is jose gonzalez' voice or the lyrics or just because it sounds like something you want to say in a way that you want to say it even though the substance could be totally different.

10. jose gonzalez covering the knife "heartbeats"
so, this was an accident... what i wanted you to hear was the knife version which is electo-awesome. the swedes, the whole nation is electro-awesome. but, instead you get more of the emotional intensity of jose gonzalez.

11. kimya dawson "my rollercoaster"
this song is just cute. super cute. if i wrote songs, i would want to write songs like this. it reminds me of highschool love and critical distance.

12. bloc party "like eating glass"
this song is the personification of how i physically feel when i am upset. the song doesn't make me upset. i have solidarity with the song.

13. rainer maria "broken radio"
this song and this band have helped me with my sadness and rage issues since 2001. english majors are good for something.

14. the secret machines "lightning blue eyes"
this is the band opening for bloc party in july (in the pool). there are tons of good
things to come.

15. sunset rubdown "us ones in between"
this is a side-project of wolf parade who opened for the arcade fire a lot in montreal. i think i have seen all of the individual members in all of their other
projects. it just reminds me of home.

16. yeah yeah yeahs "let me know"
karen o has one of the worst haircuts in rock and roll. it reminds me of my elementary school pictures. what she lacks in sound haircut judgment, she makes up for in pretty pretty voice.

17. gnarls barkley "crazy"
the new outkast. they would play this at H&M, need i say more?

18. the national "wasps nest"
this one is the equivalent of #5, but for chris. you need to buy this record.

19. final fantasy "the cn tower belongs to the dead" (many lives version)
owen pallet is one of the most charming people i have ever met. his classical violin training is better suited to rocking out than to the symphony. there is no one way to play the violin. there is no one way to be a demographer.

20. ted leo "dancing in the dark"
i have a special place in my heart for cover songs. my favorites are cute
indie-boys who sing songs written by (or for) 17 year old girls. see also: ben gibbard covering avril's "complicated", clem snide covering christina agueliara's "beautiful". this isn't one of those. i thought a mariah carey cover was enough. i don't even like the original. i don't like the BOSS at all really. living in jersey hasn't changed anything about that, but this song makes me like new jersey.

val will like: 2,4,5,6,7,11
chris will like: 3,8,12,13,15,18
you both will like: 17
wildcards: 1,9,10,14,16,19,20

anyway, let me know how successful i was in predicting your likes and dislikes, and remember the most important thing is that i like all of these songs... so learn the words and come to a show with me.

okie. jet plane time. what a fun way to kill time at the airport.

love,
cam

traditions...

dear friends,

i am a super ta (here we're called preceptors). since i am returning to canada in the coming days, i need to grade my 25 final exams in a bit of a hurry. first, i know i should not complain...because for three precept sections i have a total of 25 exams (at mcgill it would have been like 80 exams for two sections). they came in at 5pm last night and i am hoping to have them done by 3pm today. that is less than 24 hours.

so, i decided to pick up a bottle of big house red on my way home and make an evening of it. long story short, we (and i don't mean 'we' as in we at truthfully,truthfully... i had help) drank the bottle and i marked nadda... and yet (here is where the tradition comes in) i managed to spill a drop of red wine on the top paper. another semester, another stained paper. although, it will never top dave dropping a paper in the mcgill parking lot and having a car run over it, such that he had to return it with tire marks.

and now i am blogging instead of grading.

yours in the spirit of professionalism,
cam

ps- after i am done grading, there is a trip planned to the princeton record exchange. i plan to purchase beruit.

you read the good, you read the bad, you read them both and there you have...

dear friends,

i read this. not skim-read, read-read. i clearly have a problem.

that is all.

nyisc- round one

dear friends,

had a delightful day in the city yesterday. baby dayliner's instore at the fix cafe was great, even if a little ashlee simpson (no instruments, just backing track). i am super-duper excited about seeing him tonight. my life might not be complete until i hear "go on baby".

i also happened to be at the bowery ballroom. though i did not witness this, my money is on the guy who was one half of the anna kournicova/enrique iglesias impersenator team working their full "music video where we have sex in a stylized, modern and yet still public bathroom" scene out during the ambulette set.

rainer maria were fabulous, and the experience fully redeemed the horrible romper room show at montreal's rainbow room in march 2004. it was so good, i didn't even mind missing the 12:41 out of penn station and having to get the 1:41. so strange to go to bed at 3. strange, but not necessarily unpleasant. will give more late nights some consideration.

oh, and i made hannah go see my dream couch. the growing concensus (from hannah and all of the people who have seen the fabric samples in my office) is that doria grass will be the color. it should go very nicely with the burgandy accent wall i want to paint in the new trailer.

another nyc blogpost tomorrow? just maybe.

i've got the music in me

dear friends,

long time no blog. i was busy. princeton is hard. princeton also doesn't give a girl much to blog about. but i am a woman of leisure now. in fact, yesterday alone i purchased or made arrangements to purchase the following:

- tickets to see pela, ambulette, and rainer maria at bowery ballroom on saturday w/ best show friend hannah
recommended listening: rainer maria "broken radio"

- tickets to see baby dayliner, doveman, and the national at webster hall on sunday w/best show friend hannah
most highly recommended listening, with an exclamation point because i love it so much: baby dayliner "go on baby"
also recommended: going to princeton record exchange and randomly finding a used copy of baby dayliner's first cd for $1.99

- tickets to see a sliver mt. zion at northsix july 28th w/le-chris (i would certainly not be seeing a tralala opus band on my own steam. no girl would. and no, i am not going because i like him. i am going because that's what friends do. plus, maybe i'll meet a boy there. the odds will be in my favor. let's just hope it is not like the d-bar where the odds are good, but the goods are odd).
recommended listening: recommended only when you are writing philosophy or political theory papers and/or silently weeping because that girl with the pixie haircut doesn't seem to want to makeout with you

- tickets to see bloc party w/ secret machines at mccarren pool (wonder if the band is in the deep or shallow end?) july 29th w/le-chris (equal desire to see this show, although i did join the fanclub)
recommended listening: bloc party's silent alarm is recommended purchasing. secret machines "sad and lonely"

there is a big gap in those dates... but i have plans for the interim as well. hannah will be in chicago all summer providing legal advice to the poor and formerly incarcerated so i will have to make a weekend in chicago if want to see a show with her. i think i can probably get le-chris to at least two more shows, but he is only the deputy of team fun (i am the captain). i predict having to revoke his paper mache badge when the "i don't want to study for demography generals" wears off and the "i love writing about the the demography of parental incarceration" kicks in. therefore, if any of you loyal readers (all 4 of you) would like to come to the greater new jersey area and join me for any of the following kindly let me know:

- sonic youth on june 13th
- david bazan (aka pedro-the-lion) on june 20th in brooklyn or june 21st in hoboken
- secret big fun show that i cannot name on the internet lest le-chris finds this. ( i just told him to mark his calender for big fun with cam). to the rest of you, this canadian act does a wicked-awesome-super-rad cover of mariah carey's fantasy. he's in town on june 24th. (this is also the day of the coney island mermaid parade which is what le-chris guessed we were doing.... i have added that to the agenda for the morning)
- the futureheads on june 30th.

will keep you posted on july and august possibilities (indeed, i just might blog again).

and now back to work...
ms. cam

ps- i really do work. i have now put my entire physical library of books and articles into endnote and into sub-libraries based on areas i will (or may) write my comprehensive exams in, papers, and courses. i am also seriously devoted to my outlook calender and tasks lisk. and it all synchs so nicely with the crackberry.

pps- the first ps just makes it sound like i have been making dick. but for reals. i am reading articles today. and getting my paper and discussant comments ready for the ol' meetings of the canadian sociology and anthropology association. i swear.
