new feature: when sociologists (and/or canadians) do it better

dear friends,

i realize lil ol' truthfullytruthfully has degenerated into ms.cam blogs about things she buys (hercules hooks came yesterday! couch comes today!) and bands she sees (or won't see because she has too little cash and too much dignity). the reality is that those are not the things that occupy the majority of my time. most of the time i am a professional sociologist. and increasingly i find myself reading articles in the newspaper where i can immediately think of a case where a sociologist does it better. witness:

ny times article on effect of differential minimum wage in two states

vs.

dan zuberi's work on hotel workers in vancouver and seattle that considers more than just wages and looks at the other things that determine how poverty is experienced--access to healthcare, education...

anyway, be it resolved that everytime this happens i will not just mentally note it i will post it here (might be useful for teaching purposes eventually)-- which likely means you will see lots of article in media v. sociologist of religion royal rumbles here soon.

feeling more soapboxy and less vapid already,
cam
